Signs My Exhaust System Is Clogged or Leaking

If your exhaust system is clogged or leaking, you will have one or more of the problems listed below. In addition, damage to the exhaust system can also cause some of these problems. Do not worry. We are the best auto shop in town and we can repair your exhaust system if it has gone bad.

Cracked Exhaust Manifold

For example, excess heat can crack the exhaust manifold and cause leaking exhaust to flow into the engine. Unfortunately, this creates problems with fuel odors and the engine’s performance. We will talk more about this next. In addition to the exhaust manifold cracking, the gasket can also crack.

Fuel Odors in the Cabin

If you have a cracked exhaust manifold, you may end up smelling your fuel inside the passenger cabin. Unfortunately, this can also be a sign that your exhaust system is clogged. Either way, it is dangerous to drive the vehicle if you are inhaling fuel or exhaust odors. Have your car towed to our shop.

Performance Issues

If the exhaust system is leaking from the manifold, gasket, or another system part, your engine will fill with the exhaust and this will affect the engine’s combustion performance. Unfortunately, your engine will start to sputter and lag because the exhaust is preventing combustion production.

Poor Fuel Economy

As if that weren’t bad enough, your fuel economy will be reduced by the sputtering engine. Even though the engine is not running efficiently, it will use more gasoline or diesel fuel. Consequently, the clog or leak in the exhaust system can affect how many miles you get per each gallon.

Rumbling Muffler

Your exhaust system is leaking if the muffler rumbles when you press down on the accelerator. You will also notice that the engine is quite loud. Unfortunately, this means that you have a hole in the muffler and the muffler needs to be replaced. Do this sooner rather than later to avoid a noise ticket.

Damaged Tailpipe

Finally, your exhaust system can leak or get clogged at the tailpipe. This can happen if the tailpipe is damaged and has a hole in it. The tailpipe can also get clogged. It’s a good idea to inspect the tailpipe every once in a while to make sure that it looks okay.

We can do this here at our shop, so give us a call today to schedule a service appointment. We would be happy to inspect your exhaust system for clogs and leaks.
